The Zutons | Chester Live Rooms | 25.03.19

It seemed Chester certainly did have Zuton Fever when we went to see the legendary  Liverpudlian band at the Live Rooms.

Re-united for the 15th anniversary tour of their debut album Who Killed… The Zutons? the sold out Chester show was far from dead.

If anyone doubted the popularity of the Zutons after their long break then they had no reason to worry. Fans both young and old were out in full force chanting along to the indie classics.

The band took to the stage with a slightly rearranged line up. Dave McCabe, Sean Payne, Abi Harding, and Boyan Chowdhury of the original line up, were joined by Jay Lewis of The La’s and Cast in the absence of bass player Russ Pritchard who is currently on tour with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

As well as performing their debut album in full, the set also included fan favourite Valerie and Why won’t you give me your love.

Abi Harding gave energy in abundance as she danced around the stage in a bright yellow flapper dress. The perfect companion to Dave McCabe’s steady but powerful voice.

The band sounded better than ever and the crowd clearly agreed. People were up and dancing and on each other’s shoulders, much to the annoyance of security, who had to chase people down through the masses.

As the set came to an end, the band played an extended version of You Will You Won’t which was the perfect ending to the start of a successful tour.

The Zutons have proven they are as good now as they were when they debuted 15 years ago. Let’s hope that they don’t leave us waiting too long for the next one.
